Your Car Passed Its MOT, So Why Does It Need Repairs?
You collect your car, hear that it’s passed its MOT, then receive a recommendation for new brake pads. It’s reasonable to wonder why they need replacing if the car has just passed.
Can a car pass its MOT and still need repairs? Yes. The test assesses prescribed safety and environmental standards at the time of inspection. It doesn’t establish the remaining life of every component or replace scheduled maintenance. At Elite Garages, we provide MOT testing, car servicing, diagnostics and repairs, so we regularly see vehicles that have passed their MOT but still have advisory items, developing wear or routine maintenance that needs attention.
The useful question is what the recommendation means for your car: does something need replacing now, checking again soon or including in its next service?
What Repairs Might a Car Need After Passing Its MOT?
Start by asking where the recommendation came from. An item recorded during the MOT is different from something identified during a separate service or inspection. Both deserve consideration but the garage should explain the basis for its advice.
Why might brake pads or discs need replacing?
Brake pads can have usable material remaining while approaching replacement. A recommendation should explain their condition and why replacement is advised now rather than after another inspection.
Brake discs offer a particularly useful example. The MOT manual states that being below the manufacturer’s recommended thickness limit is not, by itself, a reason for failure. A disc must be significantly and obviously worn to fail on wear grounds. A technician can therefore legitimately recommend replacement following measurements even though the brakes passed the MOT.
Ask for the measurements and the applicable manufacturer’s limit. If pads and discs are both quoted, ask why each needs replacing.
What should you ask about tyre recommendations?
A tyre approaching its legal tread limit may pass but need replacing before the next MOT. For cars, the minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference.
Ask for tread readings across the tyre, rather than accepting “getting low” as the whole explanation. If wear is uneven, ask whether its cause needs investigating alongside replacement.
There’s no reliable mileage promise based on tread depth alone. Your planned driving matters, so mention an approaching holiday or a high-mileage commute when discussing timing.
Does early suspension or steering wear require replacement?
Some deterioration may be noted before it reaches MOT failure criteria. That doesn’t make every worn bush or joint an immediate replacement job.
Ask which component is affected, what deterioration has been found and whether further inspection is recommended. “Front suspension wear” is less useful than identifying the particular bush or joint and explaining its condition. Excessive wear can constitute a failure, so an advisory should never be interpreted as permission to ignore worsening symptoms.
What about oil, filters and smaller maintenance jobs?
An overdue oil change or filter replacement is routine maintenance, rather than proof that the MOT result was wrong. These jobs should follow the vehicle’s service requirements.
Keep recommendations separate: replacing a worn component, investigating a symptom and carrying out scheduled maintenance are different jobs. An itemised estimate helps you understand what you’re authorising.
What Does an MOT Advisory Actually Mean?
MOT advisories flag matters worth bringing to the driver’s attention. Often, a component is deteriorating but hasn’t reached the point of test failure. The DVSA MOT inspection manual’s explanation of defect recording sets out this distinction.
An advisory is different from a minor defect. Minor defects are formally categorised faults that still allow a pass. Major and dangerous defects cause failure. A maintenance recommendation made during a separate service isn’t automatically an MOT advisory.
With an MOT pass with advisories, ask the technician to translate the wording into a clear next step. Does the item need monitoring, another inspection or replacement? If monitoring is appropriate, agree when it should be checked again.
Does an MOT Pass Mean Your Car Is Safe For Another Year?
No. You remain responsible for keeping your vehicle roadworthy between tests. Tyres, brakes, steering and suspension can deteriorate and damage can occur after the inspection.
Our guide to what an MOT pass does and doesn’t tell you about your car explains the broader limitations.
For repair decisions, judge the car’s present condition. A recent certificate shouldn’t override a new braking problem or a marked change in steering.
What’s the Difference Between an MOT and a Car Service?
The MOT vs car service distinction becomes clearer when you look at the work involved. An MOT tests specified items against applicable standards. Servicing maintains the vehicle according to its age, mileage and manufacturer’s schedule.
Depending on the vehicle and service booked, car servicing at Elite Garages may include engine oil and filter changes, with other scheduled items requiring attention separately. Check what’s included before booking.
Electric vehicles also need maintenance, although their requirements differ. They still have tyres, brakes, suspension and other components requiring attention. Elite Garages’ EV servicing provides maintenance options for electric vehicles; the appropriate work depends on the model and its schedule.
Should You Repair an Advisory Immediately or Wait?
There’s no single timetable for repairs after MOT testing. The component’s condition, the technician’s findings and your expected use should guide the decision.
Before authorising work, ask:
- What evidence supports replacement now?
- What could happen if the work is postponed?
- If monitoring is suitable, when should the component be checked again?
- Which items on the estimate take priority?
A useful plan distinguishes work needed promptly from scheduled maintenance and items to review. Ask for that plan in writing, especially if several recommendations arrive together.
If the explanation remains unclear, a second assessment can help. Where safety is in question, establish whether the vehicle can be driven safely before taking it elsewhere. Don’t continue driving if braking or control feels unsafe.
Do Different MOT Classes Affect Repair Recommendations?
MOT requirements depend on the vehicle’s class and specification. If you also run a van, confirm the correct test before booking.
Our guide to whether your van needs a Class 7 or Class 4 MOT explains the classifications. Whichever applies, passing doesn’t replace maintenance.
How Can Elite Garages Help After an MOT Pass?
If your car passed its MOT but needs repairs, bring the result and any estimate to your local branch. Elite Garages offers MOT testing, servicing and inspections for concerns involving tyres, brakes, steering and suspension. Ask the team to explain the findings and help prioritise the next step.

Yes, if the service is due. An MOT and a service have different purposes. Passing the MOT does not replace maintenance recommended for the vehicle according to time, mileage and the manufacturer’s schedule.
No. The standard MOT does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. Symptoms involving these areas may require servicing, diagnostics or a separate mechanical inspection.
An advisory does not cause an MOT failure, but it should not automatically be ignored. Ask what it means, monitor the component and follow professional advice about when further inspection, maintenance or replacement is appropriate.
Yes. A component may pass but be showing wear, or a separate issue may fall outside the scope of the MOT. Damage or a new fault can also develop after the test. The timing alone does not establish whether the problem was present during the MOT.
