Elite Garages Celebrates The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

The weekend’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations marked the Queen’s 70 years on the throne. This is the first of its kind as the closest long-serving monarch was Queen Victoria whose reign stretched for 63 years. To mark this historic milestone, Elite Garages pulled out all the stops for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by dressing up for the occasion and organising an art competition at Shaftesbury Morrisons Daily. There were stunning creations all around but before we get to the competition details and the winners, let’s take a closer look at where the story of jubilee celebrations began.

The History Of Jubilee Celebrations

Although there were two English kings who reigned for more than 50 years, Henry III and Edward III were on the throne before the creation of Great Britain. Currently, there is little evidence to suggest that they celebrated these milestones in any significant way but it all changed with King George III’s Golden Jubilee in 1809. It was considered Britain’s first big jubilee celebration which possibly set the tone for what came next and a precursor to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Queen Victoria took to the throne at the age of 18 and celebrated two jubilees during her long reign. The first was her Golden Jubilee on 21 June 1887 followed by the Diamond Jubilee in 1897. Queen Victoria became the first British monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee. King George V also reached an impressive milestone in 1935 celebrating the monarch’s Silver Jubilee. Interestingly, it was also the year that the driving test became compulsory in the UK.

Queen Elizabeth II

In 1977, which marked the Silver Jubilee, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip made royal visits around Great Britain and Northern Ireland followed by visiting 36 counties in three months. They covered a staggering 56,000 miles to see parts of the Commonwealth.

In 2002, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee marked 50 years of reign where the Queen and His Royal Highness visited Jamaica, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and places across the United Kingdom, including Cornwall and the Isle of Skye. Ten years later came the Diamond Jubilee with a busy weekend and a series of tours throughout the UK and Commonwealth.

Queen Elizabeth II became the longest-reigning British monarch on the 9th of September 2015 and celebrated the Sapphire Jubilee in February 2017, marking 65 years since acceding to the throne. Now, in 2022, we celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee which will be fondly remembered by millions across the world.

Platinum Jubilee Art Competition

To celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Morrisons sold a corgi cake, inspired by the Queen’s beloved furry companions. Following a contest on Morrison’s Facebook page asking customers for suggestions, the cake was named ‘Clarence’. This chocolate covered swiss roll is decorated with red, blue and white sprinkles to celebrate the Queen’s 70-year reign. Not only is the face as cute as a button but it’s also edible along with the boots and the Union Jack.
