Exeter MOT
In the UK, an MOT test is done to confirm that your vehicle meets the minimum safety and environmental standards required by law. Once your car is three years old, it must pass an MOT every year to remain road legal.
At Elite Garages Exeter on Pinhoe Road, Polsloe Bridge, our DVSA-approved testers carry out a thorough inspection of the key safety and emissions components across your vehicle. This includes checks of the interior, exterior, braking system, suspension, steering, lighting, tyres and emissions.
An MOT is not a replacement for regular servicing. It simply confirms that your vehicle meets the legal safety requirements at the time of testing. If your MOT is approaching, you can book your Exeter MOT online at a convenient time.
What Happens After Your MOT Test?
At the end of the test, you’ll receive one of two outcomes:
Once the inspection has been completed, your vehicle will receive one of two possible outcomes.
✔ MOT Pass – VT20 Certificate
A pass means your vehicle meets the required safety and environmental standards. Any advisory notes listed on the certificate highlight components that may need attention in the future.
✘ MOT Fail – VT30 Certificate
If your vehicle fails the test, you will receive a VT30 failure certificate outlining the reasons for the failure along with the vehicle details and MOT test number.
Our Exeter technicians will clearly explain the results and provide an honest, no-obligation quote for any repairs required. If the vehicle fails its test and repairs are carried out promptly, we can also offer a FREE MOT retest within 10 working days.
Understanding MOT Defect Categories
During an MOT inspection, any issues identified are classified into one of several categories depending on their severity and impact on safety or the environment. These categories help drivers understand the urgency of repairs.
| Dangerous | A defect that has a direct and immediate risk to road safety or presents a serious impact on the environment. Do not drive the vehicle until it has been repaired. | Fail |
| Major | Possible effect on vehicle safety and may put other road users at risk or have an impact on the environment. Repair the defect immediately. | Fail |
| Minor | No significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment. Repairs are required as soon as possible. | Pass |
| Advisory | Not a safety concern yet but could become more serious in the future. Monitor and repair if needed. | Pass |
| Pass | It meets the minimum legal standard. Ensure that it continues to meet the standard. | Pass |
MOT Changes You Should Know
In May 2018, the government announced several changes to the MOT test in England, Scotland and Wales. The updated MOT rules apply to cars, vans, motorcycles and other light passenger vehicles. Any defects found during the test are placed into one of three categories: minor, major or dangerous.
In more recent updates, MOT testers now inspect:
- brake discs for wear or cracking
- reversing lights on newer vehicles
- steering systems, including leaks from the steering box
- fluid contamination
- dashboard warning lights
Vehicles over 40 years old may be MOT-exempt if they have not been substantially altered. You can check your vehicle’s status online. If you’d like to reduce the risk of unexpected failures, it’s also worth reviewing some common MOT failure causes before your test.
