Dorchester MOT
The MOT test is a legal requirement designed to confirm that your vehicle meets the basic road safety and environmental standards set out by the DVSA. Once your car is over three years old, it must pass this check every year. During the test, one of our trained technicians will inspect key areas of your vehicle—from the interior and exterior to what’s under the bonnet and underneath the car itself. After your MOT test is complete, you’ll be issued with either a pass or a fail certificate. If your vehicle meets the required standard, you’ll receive a VT20 MOT pass certificate. If it doesn’t, you’ll be given a VT30 ‘Refusal of an MOT Test Certificate’, which outlines the test number, your vehicle details, and the specific reasons for the failure.
The MOT is primarily focused on vehicle safety, roadworthiness, and emissions, with particular attention given to components like brakes and exhaust systems. It’s a legal requirement once your car reaches three years of age and must be renewed annually.
It’s worth noting that the MOT is a visual inspection only—testers can’t carry out repairs during the test itself. So, to keep your car in good working order, it’s still important to stick to regular servicing in between MOTs. It also helps when you work with an MOT garage you can trust. Here’s some advice on what to look for when choosing your MOT centre.
Changes to the MOT Test
In May 2018, the MOT test was updated across England, Scotland, and Wales, introducing new rules that apply to cars, vans, motorbikes, and other light vehicles. One of the key changes was the way faults are categorised—now classed as minor, major, or dangerous.
The severity of the issue and the potential risk it poses will determine how it’s classified during the test. At our Eastbourne MOT centre, our testers will clearly explain any issues spotted and let you know which items need to be monitored or repaired.
Here’s a quick guide to what each defect category means and how it can affect your MOT result:
| Dangerous | A defect that has a direct and immediate risk to road safety or presents a serious impact on the environment. Do not drive the vehicle until it has been repaired. | Fail |
| Major | Possible effect on vehicle safety and may put other road users at risk or have an impact on the environment. Repair the defect immediately. | Fail |
| Minor | No significant effect on the safety of the vehicle or impact on the environment. Repairs are required as soon as possible. | Pass |
| Advisory | Not a safety concern yet but could become more serious in the future. Monitor and repair if needed. | Pass |
| Pass | It meets the minimum legal standard. Ensure that it continues to meet the standard. | Pass |
MOT Dorchester Emission Standards
The updated MOT rules also introduced tougher emissions standards, particularly for diesel vehicles fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). If visible smoke of any colour is seen coming from the exhaust, or if there’s evidence the DPF has been tampered with or removed, your car will automatically receive a major fault.
The MOT certificate itself has also been redesigned. It now clearly lists any issues found during the test, grouped by category (minor, major, or dangerous), making it easier for drivers to understand what needs attention.
Another change relates to historic vehicles. Cars that are over 40 years old and haven’t been substantially modified are now exempt from MOT testing. You can check your vehicle’s registration date online if you’re unsure about its eligibility. Previously, only vehicles built before 1960 were exempt.
As part of the updated test, a few extra components are now inspected, including:
- Steering systems – especially any signs of fluid leaks in the steering box
- Reversing lights – must be working properly, or it’s a fail
- Brake discs – if significantly worn or visibly damaged, your vehicle won’t pass
We’ve mentioned some of the important aspects of the new MOT test but for more information, we recommend contacting Elite Garages. If your car is ready for the test, book your Dorchester MOT online today.

Common MOT Failures and How to Avoid Them
Knowing what typically causes MOT failures can help you stay ahead of potential problems—and avoid unnecessary costs or stress on the day. Below are some of the most frequent culprits, along with practical ways to prevent them.
- Lights & Indicators: Faulty bulbs are one of the top fail points. Check all lights—headlights, indicators, brake and number plate lights—before your test, or visit us for a quick bulb check.
- Tyres & Tread Depth: Tyres must have at least 1.6mm tread and be free from damage. Use the 20p coin test at home, or get a free tyre check at our Dorchester branch.
- Brakes: Squealing, grinding, or a soft pedal could mean your brake pads or discs are worn. If you’re unsure, book a brake check before your MOT.
- Suspension: Clunks, bouncing, or pulling to one side might indicate worn shocks or springs—common MOT fails that are easily fixed when spotted early.
- Wipers & Windscreen: Cracks in the driver’s line of vision or streaky wipers can fail your Dorchester MOT. Top up screen wash and replace worn blades ahead of time.
