Geely Services | Geely Car Servicing, MOTs & Repairs

Geely might be a new badge on British roads, but there’s a lot more behind the name than you might expect. From the compact EX2 electric hatchback to the EX5 SUV and Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid, Geely is bringing a fresh choice of family-friendly cars to the UK.

At Elite Garages, we help Geely owners with car servicing, MOT testing, diagnostics, tyres, brakes, suspension and general repairs, subject to model compatibility and the equipment required.

Whether you’re driving an all-electric Geely or a hybrid that combines petrol and electric power, we’ll help you look after the parts that keep it safe, comfortable and dependable.

Geely: A New UK Arrival With a Much Bigger Story

Geely’s story began in China in 1986, when entrepreneur Li Shufu founded a business making refrigerator components. Motorcycles followed, and in 1997 the company entered the car industry.

Its first passenger car, the Geely Haoqing, arrived in 1998. It was a world away from the technology-packed electric SUVs the company builds today. Over the following decades, Geely grew into a major international automotive business. One of its best-known moves was acquiring Volvo Cars in 2010.

Today, the wider Geely group has connections to several familiar names, including Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, smart and LEVC, the company behind London’s modern electric taxis.

That doesn’t mean these cars are mechanically identical, of course. Each brand has its own vehicles, engineering requirements and service procedures. Geely launched its own passenger-car brand in the UK in October 2025, starting with the EX5 electric SUV. The line-up has since expanded to include smaller electric cars and plug-in hybrids.

It’s an interesting mix of established manufacturing experience and relatively new technology for British motorists. For the latest specifications on the differnet Geely models, visit the official Geely UK website.

Geely Car Servicing: Electric and Hybrid Cars Need Different Care

It’s tempting to assume that a newer electric car needs very little attention. There’s no conventional engine oil to change, no exhaust system and fewer moving engine components but plenty of familiar maintenance jobs remain. Brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, filters, fluids and electrical components still need checking. A vehicle’s weight, mileage, driving conditions and service history all affect how those parts wear.

Elite Garages offers Bronze, Silver and Gold car servicing. Our Bronze package covers essential checks and lubricant servicing where applicable. Silver provides a broader inspection, while Gold is our most comprehensive package.

For Geely vehicles, the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule takes priority. Our standard packages may need adapting, and we’ll need to confirm which work can be carried out on your particular model.

How Often Does a Geely Need Servicing?

There is an important difference between the UK models.

  • The electric EX2 and EX5 have manufacturer service intervals beginning at 20,000 miles or 24 months, whichever comes first.
  • The Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid requires servicing every 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever comes first.

That’s a useful reminder that not all electrified vehicles follow the same maintenance schedule. The Starray’s petrol engine needs routine attention even if you complete many of your shorter journeys using electric power.

Geely also offers authorised-dealer servicing arrangements and, for some eligible new vehicles, complimentary first services. Check your vehicle’s warranty terms and service documentation before choosing where to book.

Geely EX2 and EX5 Electric Vehicle Maintenance

The EX2 and EX5 are fully electric, so they don’t require spark plugs, conventional engine oil changes or exhaust repairs.

However, that doesn’t make them maintenance-free. Both models still depend on mechanical components that work hard every day, particularly on uneven British roads.

A routine inspection may include checking:

  • Tyre condition, pressures and wear patterns.
  • Brake pads, discs, calipers and brake fluid.
  • Steering joints, suspension and shock absorbers.
  • Windscreen wipers, lights and other safety equipment.
  • Cabin filters and suitable air-conditioning components.

The high-voltage battery, electric drive system and thermal-management components have additional manufacturer-specific requirements.

High-voltage repairs and specialist battery diagnostics must only be undertaken by appropriately qualified technicians with suitable equipment and access. Please contact your Elite Garages branch to confirm which Geely maintenance tasks can be accommodated.

Geely Starray EM-i: Why the Hybrid Needs More Attention

The Starray EM-i is a plug-in hybrid, not a fully electric vehicle with a petrol generator.

It combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine with an electric motor and rechargeable battery, allowing the car to use electric power, petrol power or a combination of both according to driving conditions.

That flexibility is useful for drivers who want electric motoring for shorter trips without depending entirely on charging during longer journeys. It also means there’s more to maintain. Alongside the braking, steering, suspension and electrical systems, the Starray has a combustion engine with oil, filters, cooling components and other service requirements.

Don’t Ignore the Petrol Engine Just Because You Drive Electrically

A Starray owner who charges regularly may use very little petrol on local journeys. Even so, engine oil ages, fluids deteriorate and maintenance intervals still apply. Short journeys and long periods of limited engine use can also create different maintenance considerations from regular motorway driving.

Follow Geely’s service schedule rather than judging engine maintenance solely by how often you visit a petrol station. Routine mechanical work can be assessed by Elite Garages, while manufacturer-specific hybrid and high-voltage procedures require confirmation before booking.

Geely MOT Testing

Because Geely’s own UK passenger-car range arrived in late 2025, most examples won’t need their first MOT for a little while yet.

Under the usual rules for cars registered in Great Britain, the first MOT is due when the vehicle reaches three years old, followed by annual testing. An MOT at Elite Garages checks essential roadworthiness items, including tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, lights and visibility.

The type of Geely makes a difference here, too. The fully electric EX2 and EX5 are exempt from the exhaust-emissions part of the test. The Starray EM-i has a petrol engine, so the applicable emissions checks form part of its MOT.

Even before the first MOT is due, don’t overlook damaged tyres, brake problems or warning lights. A new car can still develop faults or suffer damage from potholes and kerbs.

Geely Diagnostics and Warning Lights

Modern Geely vehicles are packed with electronics, from their digital displays and driver-assistance systems to battery management and charging controls. When something goes wrong, a dashboard warning may be the first sign.

Our car diagnostics service can help investigate faults in compatible systems, using diagnostic information alongside practical mechanical checks. Not every warning means an expensive repair, but simply clearing a fault code without finding its cause isn’t a solution.

Some Geely functions may require manufacturer-specific software, security access or an authorised repairer. If you experience a high-voltage warning, serious charging fault or loss of propulsion, follow the vehicle’s instructions and seek specialist assistance rather than continuing to drive.

Geely Brakes: Why Less Use Doesn’t Always Mean Less Wear

Regenerative braking is one of the clever features of electric and hybrid vehicles.

When you slow down, the electric motor can recover some of the vehicle’s energy instead of relying entirely on conventional friction brakes. That can reduce brake-pad wear, but there’s a downside. Brake discs that aren’t used frequently may develop surface corrosion, particularly after wet weather or repeated short journeys.

The EX2, EX5 and Starray EM-i all still need their mechanical brakes to work properly, especially during emergency stops. If you notice grinding, squealing, vibration or a change in braking performance, arrange a brake inspection. It’s also worth remembering that regenerative braking doesn’t replace routine brake-fluid checks or inspection of calipers, hoses and discs.

Geely Suspension and Wheel Alignment

A smooth electric powertrain can make a car feel particularly refined. That’s great until an unfamiliar knock or vibration starts to stand out. Potholes, worn road surfaces and kerb impacts can affect suspension components and wheel alignment on any vehicle.

For the larger EX5 and Starray SUVs, suspension condition is especially important for stable handling and comfortable family journeys. Signs worth checking include uneven tyre wear, pulling to one side, steering-wheel vibration or knocking over bumps.

Elite Garages provides suspension repairs and wheel alignment for compatible vehicles. Correct alignment helps tyres wear evenly and can reduce unnecessary rolling resistance, which matters when you’re trying to get the most from an electric vehicle’s range.

Choosing the Right Tyres for Your Geely

Tyres are one of the most important choices you’ll make for your Geely, and it’s not simply a matter of finding the correct diameter. The EX2, EX5 and Starray EM-i have different dimensions, weights and driving characteristics.

Geely EX2 Tyres

The EX2 is a compact electric hatchback. For everyday driving, good wet-weather grip, comfort and predictable handling are particularly valuable.

Geely EX5 Tyres

The EX5 is a larger electric SUV, so tyre load capacity, stability and rolling resistance deserve attention. Electric motor torque and vehicle weight can influence tyre wear, making correct pressures and wheel alignment especially important.

Geely Starray EM-i Tyres

The Starray’s combination of petrol and electric power makes it a versatile family SUV. Suitable tyres need to provide dependable braking, comfortable motorway performance and the correct load rating. When choosing replacements, always check the vehicle’s approved tyre sizes and specifications rather than assuming every trim uses the same fitment.

Elite Garages offers a wide selection of tyre brands, including Michelin, Continental, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Hankook and Pirelli. You can also search for tyres online using your registration or tyre size.

Geely Air Conditioning and Cabin Comfort

Whether you’re driving the EX2 through town or taking the Starray on a long journey, a properly functioning air-conditioning system makes a difference. It keeps the cabin comfortable, helps demist windows and improves visibility during damp weather.

On electric and hybrid vehicles, heating and cooling can also be linked to more complex thermal-management systems. That’s why a routine cabin air-conditioning service isn’t the same as repairing a high-voltage battery cooling circuit.

Elite Garages provides air-conditioning checks and servicing, subject to the vehicle’s refrigerant specification and the equipment needed.

Geely ADAS Calibration

Geely’s UK models offer a range of advanced driver-assistance features, including systems designed to help with lane positioning, maintaining distance and emergency braking. Please check compatibility with the relevant branch first, as newer Geelysitioned.

After certain repairs, such as windscreen replacement, collision repairs or work affecting suspension geometry, calibration may be required. Elite Garages offers ADAS calibration at Fareham, Salisbury and Southampton.

Please check compatibility with the relevant branch first, as newer Geely models may require manufacturer-specific procedures or equipment.

Keeping Your Geely Ready for Everyday Driving

Geely’s arrival in Britain brings more choice for drivers considering electric and plug-in hybrid cars. But whatever technology sits beneath the bonnet or floor, the basics of good vehicle maintenance still matter.

Healthy brakes, correctly fitted tyres, sound suspension and regular checks all help make daily driving safer and more enjoyable.

At Elite Garages, we’re here to help with the routine maintenance and repairs your Geely needs, while being clear about work that requires specialist manufacturer support.
